What do you think of the Derek Morris signing? I'm a bit concerned they may have overpaid at 3.3 mil. I still think someone will be on the move to make way for Kessel to come back.
I don't necessarily understand this approach. So someone please feel free to explain it to me. It just doesn't seem to make sense. Are we going for age here or what. Ward was making $2.5 mil which is nearly $1 mil less then Morris. And when he wasn't dealing with injuries he played very well along side Chara. The only thing I can think of is age. Ward is 36 versus Morris at 30. Other then that I just can't figure it out. Talks all off season have been to beef up the blueline, so to get rid of possibly our 2nd best d-man and then pick up someone that, in my opinion, isn't even as solid as Ward let alone better doesn't make sense to me. Please let me know if there is something I'm not aware of. Now they're even closer to the cap then before and, seemingly, not any better.
Jury is still out for me on this deal, I really thought they were going to try and deal Kobasew for another salary dump and see if they could get Kessel & someone like Zubov done. One thing Morris has going for him is his durability. He's only played in 70gms or fewer two times in his career and usually plays over 75 games in all other seasons. Wardo played in 65 games the past two seasons, so his aggressive style may not be suitable to his game as he is 36 yrs old now.
Other thing is, Morris said he loves Boston and would've loved to sign a multi-year deal. So, he might have some additional fire in the belly to prove himself and get a multi-year deal signed next year with the B's.
But I agree, Yanick, I didn't see this coming and not sure where they are going with it! Also - PC has said the B's are all done with moves for the foreseeable future, but who knows what that means.
